The campus placement season is on, and students are gearing up for placements. The resume plays a pivotal role in the selection process, so a well-crafted resume gives an edge in the application. Crafting the perfect resume requires a balance of structure, content, and presentation to make a strong first impression, as the majority of companies do their initial shortlisting through resume collection. There are certain do’s and don’ts one needs to follow while crafting a perfect resume. A one-page resume is key to opening the doors to big corporate giants, so give your best effort in making it, and keep updating it as you acquire new skills and based on the job’s requirements.
Here’s a 10-point formula tailored for campus placements.
5 Do’s for Crafting a Perfect Resume:
1) Professional Header
Include your full name, contact details (phone number and professional email), and LinkedIn profile (ensure your profile is updated). You can also add your college and degree details.
2) Career Objective or Summary
Write a concise career objective, emphasizing your academic background, passion for the field, and enthusiasm for the role. Mention your key skills and the value you aim to bring to the organization.
3) Highlight Educational Qualifications
List your degrees in reverse chronological order (starting with the most recent). Include your CGPA/percentage, institution name, and graduation year. Mention any academic achievements like scholarships, honors, or high CGPA.
4) List Projects and Internships
Include both academic and industrial projects, along with any internships and volunteering experiences, to demonstrate the range of work you’ve done.
5) Add Skills and Achievements
These can be academic, professional, and extracurricular. Showcase leadership positions, club memberships, or participation in events, competitions, and sports. Include competitions won, certificates, hackathons, or paper presentations relevant to your field.
5 Don’ts for Resume Making:
1) Overly Complex Formatting
Avoid using too many fonts, colors, or graphics. Keep the design simple and professional to ensure readability, unless you are a design student.
2) Long Resume
The majority of companies prefer a one-page resume for college freshers. So, limit your resume to one page (two if absolutely necessary) and use bullet points for clarity.
3) Irrelevant Information
Avoid adding unnecessary details like marital status, religion, or hobbies unrelated to the job. These can clutter your resume and distract from your qualifications.
4) Don’t Exaggerate or Lie
Always be truthful about your skills and experience. Avoid the temptation to exaggerate, as this can backfire during interviews or reference checks.
5) Don’t Use Unprofessional Contact Information
Avoid unprofessional email addresses (e.g., badboy123@gmail.com). Use a professional email with your name for a more polished presentation.
Additional Tips:
- Proofread your resume multiple times for spelling, grammar, and formatting mistakes.
- Save your resume as a PDF, and the file name should be in the format “Your Name_Resume.”
- Avoid using fonts smaller than size 10 and larger than size 14.
