Political Buzz in Okhla
Okhla, a Muslim-majority constituency, is witnessing a political surge as 25 aspirants vie for the Congress MLA ticket in the 2025 Delhi Assembly elections. With activists, part-time leaders, and full-time politicians entering the fray, the race is heating up.
A senior Congress leader acknowledged the increasing number of contenders. “Initially, there were 19 candidates. After the reshuffle in Delhi Congress, new faces emerged, claiming their close connections to top leaders increase their chances,” he revealed.
Civic Issues Persist Despite Promises
For Okhla residents, pre-election promises are nothing new. Over two decades of Congress rule, followed by a decade of AAP governance, have failed to address basic issues. Overflowing sewers, open manholes, garbage piles, and broken roads remain part of daily life.
Many residents feel disillusioned. “Leaders promise change but vanish after elections,” shared a local.
Political Festivities and Big Spending
The recent Congress Nyay rally in Okhla resembled a festival, with posters and banners plastered everywhere. Locals estimated candidates spent between ₹1 lakh and ₹5 lakh each on event preparations, hoping to impress senior Congress leaders.
An e-rickshaw driver quipped, “It feels like election day with all these posters.” Fierce competition even led to rival posters being torn down. One resident speculated the total spending exceeded ₹50 lakh, though exact figures remain unclear.
Motivations Questioned
Despite the high number of contenders, some locals question their motives. A resident remarked, “Many join politics for money, not to empower the community or improve the area.”
One ticket hopeful added, “Unlike other areas where finding candidates is a challenge, Okhla sees a rush for Congress tickets due to perceived opportunities.”
Congress Senses Opportunity
Many believe Congress has the upper hand this time, with growing anti-incumbency against AAP MLA Amanatullah Khan. His declining popularity has fueled hopes of a Congress victory.
“Congress leaders feel this is their best chance to reclaim Okhla,” shared a local leader.
