Patna: Tanya Soni, a 25-year-old aspiring civil servant, was passionate about poetry and regularly participated in cultural events during her college years. Her dream was to clear the UPSC exam and join the civil services. Tragically, her life was cut short during a visit to the library on a rainy day.
Tanya, originally from Aurangabad, Bihar, had moved to Delhi for her college education. After earning a Bachelor’s degree in political science, she dedicated herself to preparing for the IAS entrance exam. Her parents reside in Telangana, where her father, Vijay Kumar, is employed.
Vijay Kumar was traveling to Lucknow when he received the devastating news of his daughter’s death. “Upon hearing the news, we immediately got off at Nagpur and took a flight to Delhi,” he shared with PTI.
Tanya’s body is now en route to her home in Bihar for the final rites. Her father, employed with Singareni Collieries Company Ltd, mentioned that becoming an IAS officer was Tanya’s lifelong dream.

At her home in Aurangabad, relatives are heartbroken. Her grandfather described her as the brightest student in the family. Her cousin Ankit reminisced, “She was incredibly sharp and loved poetry. She also enjoyed dancing and performed at college events.”
On that fateful Saturday evening, Tanya was among about 20 students in the library of Rau’s IAS Study Circle in Delhi’s Rajendra Nagar. A sudden downpour caused the basement to flood, trapping the students. While most were rescued, Tanya and two others tragically lost their lives.
This incident has ignited widespread outrage over civic negligence, with the main Opposition BJP criticizing the Aam Aadmi Party, which governs Delhi and oversees the municipal corporation.
Investigations revealed that the coaching center had converted the basement into a library in violation of regulations. Seven individuals, including the owners of the coaching center and the basement, have been arrested
