Former Union minister and Congress leader Salman Khurshid’s recent statement warning of a “Bangladesh-type situation” in India has sparked a major controversy. The BJP has condemned his remarks, describing them as “anarchist” and accusing the Congress of attempting to destabilize the nation.
“After consecutive losses, Congress aims to plunge the country into chaos,” stated BJP MP Anurag Thakur. “They are willing to regress the nation for power. Such statements reflect the party’s mindset. Does Congress endorse Khurshid’s view?”
Khurshid made his remarks during the launch of academic Mujibur Rehman’s book, Shikwa-e-Hind: The Political Future of Indian Muslims. He said, “Despite apparent normalcy in Kashmir and Delhi, underlying tensions could lead to unrest similar to Bangladesh.”
Other BJP leaders also criticized Khurshid and the Congress. BJP MP Rajiv Pratap Rudy labeled the comments as “seditious,” while his colleague Sambit Patra suggested it was a veiled threat from Congress. “Congress leaders present at the event implicitly supported Khurshid. Even Rahul Gandhi has hinted at potential riots and attacks on the Prime Minister. Is this their vision for India?” Patra questioned.
Responding to Khurshid’s statement, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor refrained from direct commentary. “You should ask him for clarity. The broader lesson from Bangladesh is the necessity of democracy, fair elections, transparency, and functioning democratic institutions to prevent such scenarios.”

Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray also weighed in, emphasizing the power of the people. “Bangladesh’s events underscore the supremacy of the people’s will. Politicians must heed this. If Prime Minister Modi can influence Ukraine’s situation, he should ensure peace in Bangladesh and protect Hindus there,” Thackeray remarked. He also highlighted ongoing issues in Manipur and Kashmir.
The political discourse ignited by Khurshid’s comment continues to unfold, highlighting deep-seated tensions and differing visions for India’s future.
