Women throughout Kolkata and other regions of Bengal will converge for a significant protest tomorrow night, demanding justice for a 31-year-old doctor who was brutally raped and murdered at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. This protest, scheduled to start at 11:55 PM, is being labeled as “For women’s independence on the midnight of independence.”
Social media platforms are abuzz with posters detailing various protest locations, reflecting the growing participation from across the state. Men are also joining the demonstration in large numbers, expressing solidarity with the cause. Prominent figures such as actors Swastika Mukherjee and Churni Ganguly, along with filmmaker Pratim D Gupta, are urging the public to join the rally at the location most convenient for them.
The tragic incident that prompted this protest occurred when the young doctor, who was on night duty, was found deceased in a seminar hall at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on Friday morning. The victim had sustained severe injuries across multiple parts of her body.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has given the Kolkata Police until Sunday to complete their investigation. Should the investigation remain unsatisfactory, the state government is prepared to recommend a CBI inquiry if requested by the victim’s family. Banerjee has emphasized the state government’s commitment to transparency.
Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal assured that the investigation is ongoing, with authorities interviewing those who were near the scene. He expressed confidence that any additional suspects will be apprehended within the next four to five days.
