Prime Accused Dies During Police Investigation in Assam Gang-Rape Case

The Prime Accused’s Attempted Escape
The prime accused, Tafazul Islam, was arrested on Friday. While in police custody, he allegedly attempted to escape during a scene re-creation of the crime. Early on Saturday, with his hands cuffed, he reportedly jumped into a nearby pond. Despite immediate search efforts, his body was recovered two hours later.
The Incident and Public Outcry
The girl was attacked while returning home from tuition in Dhing around 8 p.m. on Thursday. She was left injured and unconscious by the roadside near a pond. Locals found her and informed the police, who launched an investigation.
Ongoing Investigations and Arrests
So far, one person has been arrested, and another has been detained. Efforts to locate the third suspect are ongoing. Assam’s Director General of Police, GP Singh, visited the crime scene and reviewed the investigation’s progress.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma addressed the incident, emphasizing the need for prompt and strict action in cases of atrocities against women.
