Bank Manager and Cashier Drown in Flooded Faridabad Underpass
A tragic incident unfolded in Faridabad on Friday as a bank manager and a cashier drowned after their SUV was submerged in a flooded underpass. Heavy rains have been battering Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR), leading to widespread waterlogging.
Victims Identified as HDFC Bank Employees
The victims were identified as Punyashreya Sharma, the manager of HDFC Bank’s branch in Gurugram’s Sector 31, and Viraj Dwivedi, the branch’s cashier. The two were driving home to Faridabad in a Mahindra XUV700 when they encountered the flooded Old Faridabad railway underpass. Despite seeing the water, they misjudged its depth.

Delhi NCR Faces Record Rainfall
This tragedy occurred during the second consecutive day of heavy rainfall in Delhi NCR. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had issued an orange alert for Thursday and Friday due to the downpour, caused by a depression over southwest Uttar Pradesh.
Traffic and Waterlogging Across NCR
Many areas across NCR faced traffic jams and severe waterlogging on Friday. In Gurugram, key intersections like Hero Honda Chowk, Rajiv Chowk, and IFFCO Chowk were particularly affected. Rain persisted into Saturday, with the IMD issuing a yellow alert for moderate rainfall.
According to IMD data, Delhi has recorded over 1,000 mm of rainfall this month—the highest since 2021 and the second highest in the last decade.
