One Nation, One Election: Modi Government’s Big Push for Unified Polls
The Modi government is moving forward with the ambitious plan for One Nation, One Election. Sources have confirmed that the plan, discussed in parliament for years, will be implemented during the current government’s tenure. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has repeatedly highlighted this initiative, including in his recent Independence Day speech.
Formation of the Committee
A committee led by former President Ramnath Kovind has already submitted its recommendations. The first phase calls for simultaneous elections for the Lok Sabha and state assemblies. After that, within 100 days, local body elections will also be synchronized. This step marks a significant shift in India’s electoral process.
Law Commission’s Involvement
The Law Commission is expected to endorse the idea soon. The Commission may recommend simultaneous elections across all levels of government by 2029. This would include Lok Sabha, state assemblies, and local bodies like municipalities and panchayats. In cases of hung houses or no-confidence motions, the Commission suggests creating a unified government structure.
Modi’s Independence Day Push
During his Independence Day address, PM Modi strongly advocated for this policy. He argued that frequent elections slow down the country’s progress. “The nation has to come forward for ‘one nation, one election’,” Modi emphasized.
Challenges and Opposition Concerns
However, opposition parties remain opposed to the idea, citing constitutional issues. They argue that synchronizing election cycles could disrupt governance. Regional parties are concerned about their ability to address local issues amidst the larger Lok Sabha election. The recurring costs of electronic voting machines, estimated at ₹ 10,000 crore every 15 years, also add to the debate.
Despite these concerns, the government is confident it can build a consensus and move forward with the plan, ensuring smooth governance for the country.
