Atishi Takes Oath as Delhi’s Youngest Chief Minister
Atishi took oath today as Delhi’s new Chief Minister, days after Arvind Kejriwal resigned following his bail in the Delhi liquor policy case. At 41, she becomes the youngest person to hold this position.
Low-Key Ceremony Amid Kejriwal’s Exit
Before her swearing-in, Atishi met with Kejriwal and her new cabinet members, including Mukesh Ahlawat, Gopal Rai, Imran Hussain, Kailash Gahlot, and Saurabh Bharadwaj. Despite the low-key event, Atishi expressed her emotional attachment to Kejriwal’s leadership. She praised him for improving public services, like free healthcare, education, and bus rides for women.
A New Challenge for Atishi
Atishi’s rise comes at a crucial moment for the AAP, with assembly elections approaching next year. She now faces the challenge of fast-tracking key policies like the Mukhyamantri Mahila Samman Yojana, Electric Vehicle Policy 2.0, and doorstep delivery of services. She will need to prove her government’s majority in the 70-member assembly during a special session on September 26-27.
Atishi’s Political Journey
Atishi, Delhi’s third woman Chief Minister after Sushma Swaraj and Sheila Dikshit, is no stranger to tough situations. She was inducted into the cabinet after Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia’s arrest last year. Despite joining AAP in 2013, she remained behind the scenes as an education policy adviser before entering electoral politics in 2019. Although she lost her first parliamentary race against BJP’s Gautam Gambhir, she won the Kalkaji seat in the 2020 Delhi elections.
Atishi now shoulders the responsibility of leading AAP through a turbulent phase, but her experience and determination may steer the party toward stability and progress.
