A 55-year-old doctor was shot and killed last night at a private nursing home in Jaitpur, Delhi. This comes less than two months after the rape and murder of a 31-year-old doctor in Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
According to Nima Hospital staff, two teenagers arrived late at night. One of them had previously visited the hospital for an injured toe. After the dressing, they asked for a prescription and went to Dr. Javed Akhtar’s cabin. Dr. Akhtar practiced Unani medicine.
Within minutes, nursing staff members Gajala Parveen and Md Kamil heard a gunshot. They rushed to the cabin and found Dr. Akhtar with a fatal head injury.
Hospital staff believe the suspects are around 16 or 17 years old. The police suspect this could be a targeted killing, and the teenagers may have scoped out the area the night before.
Authorities are currently reviewing CCTV footage from the hospital to identify the attackers.
This incident follows the horrific Kolkata case where a doctor was raped and killed while on duty. The Kolkata crime led to nationwide protests, with doctors demanding safer working conditions. As a result, the Supreme Court established a National Task Force to devise ways to protect healthcare workers.
In light of the Delhi shooting, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has criticized the Centre and Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena for failing to ensure safety in the city. Delhi Minister Saurabh Bharadwaj commented, “Delhi has become a crime capital—gangsters, extortion, and murders happening daily. The Central Government and Lieutenant Governor have failed in their responsibilities.”
Police investigations continue, as concerns about the safety of doctors in the workplace rise once again.
