Curfew Declared in Manipur’s Jiribam Amidst Militant Clash
In Manipur, tensions surged when a deadly encounter between security forces and suspected militants occurred in Manipur’s Jiribam. The district administration swiftly imposed a curfew. This measure comes in the wake of the Kuki-Zo council’s call for a “total shutdown” to mourn the loss of what they describe as “village volunteers.”
The district magistrate issued strict orders against carrying weapons. However, exemptions were made for government officials, security personnel, and essential services. For emergencies like weddings or funerals, individuals must seek written permission.
Security Forces Engage Militants
On Monday, an intense confrontation unfolded when insurgents attacked a CRPF camp and a nearby police station in Jiribam. The security forces retaliated, resulting in the death of 11 militants. The skirmish also left two CRPF members injured, one critically.
Community Response and Calls for Justice
The Kuki-Zo Council vehemently protested, labeling the deceased as “village volunteers.” They organized a shutdown from 5:00 AM to 6:00 PM on Tuesday to honor the victims and demand a thorough investigation into the incident.
Ongoing Conflict in Manipur
The root of this violence traces back to ethnic clashes that began on May 3 last year, sparked by a contentious court order regarding tribal status. Despite a brief respite, the region has seen a resurgence of violence, with recent brutal attacks exacerbating the situation.
Violence Spreads
Following the encounter, further outbreaks of violence occurred across Imphal Valley, with both sides exchanging fire, signaling the persistent unrest in the region.
