Sheikh Hasina’s Extradition Sought by Bangladesh
The interim government in Bangladesh has formally requested India to extradite Sheikh Hasina. The 77-year-old Awami League leader fled to India on August 5 after massive protests ended her 16-year rule.
Arrest Warrants Issued
The Dhaka-based International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) has issued arrest warrants against Hasina, her advisors, and former officials. They face accusations of crimes against humanity and genocide.
Foreign Affairs Adviser Touhid Hossain confirmed the diplomatic note sent to India. “Bangladesh wants her back for the judicial process,” Hossain told reporters.
Extradition Process Underway
Home Adviser Jahangir Alam stated that the government has initiated the extradition process. “A letter has been sent to the foreign ministry for her return under the existing treaty with India,” Alam said.
India’s Role in the Crisis
Weeks earlier, Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri visited Bangladesh and met interim Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus. Discussions covered several issues, including attacks on minorities and Hasina’s stay in India.
Yunus expressed concern over Hasina’s statements from India, saying they created tensions in Bangladesh.
Hasina’s Accusations Against Interim Government
From exile, Sheikh Hasina accused the interim government of fascism. In a virtual address to Awami League supporters, she alleged that Muhammad Yunus orchestrated the political upheaval that ousted her.
She also condemned the recent rise in attacks on minorities, accusing the new regime of allowing Jamaat and terrorists free rein. “Bangladesh’s democracy and progress are being undone under Yunus’s leadership,” she claimed.
This extradition request marks a critical moment in Bangladesh’s political crisis, with both sides trading accusations amidst widespread unrest.
