India’s Bid to Host the 2036 Olympics Gains Momentum
India has officially initiated its bid to host the 2036 Olympic Games. This milestone, achieved in October, marks the beginning of an ambitious journey to join the elite club of Asian nations that have hosted the prestigious event. Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the bid during the International Olympic Committee (IOC) session in Mumbai, with plans also to host the 2030 Youth Olympics.
Challenges in Indian Sports Administration
Despite this progress, internal conflicts within the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) have marred the year. Under PT Usha’s leadership, the IOA faced factional disputes. Twelve members of the Executive Council clashed with Usha over the appointment of CEO Raghuram Iyer, leading to a prolonged standoff. These disputes even led the IOC to suspend the Olympic Solidarity grant of ₹8.5 crore, which supports athlete development programs.
Reforms and Athlete-Centric Initiatives
Amid these challenges, significant reforms were introduced. Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya and Usha pushed for an athlete-centric approach. Initiatives included revised eligibility for government jobs for Khelo India medalists, expanded athlete support at the Paris Olympics, and the RESET program for retired athletes’ skill development.
Additionally, Usha successfully advocated for yoga’s inclusion as a demonstration sport at the 2026 Asian Games. Proposals like medical insurance and pensions for ex-Olympians also gained traction, with new sponsors backing the IOA.
Draft Sports Bill Sparks Debate
The government circulated a Draft Sports Bill aimed at ensuring transparency in the IOA and National Sports Federations (NSFs). However, concerns arose about potential threats to autonomy. Usha raised these issues, and Mandaviya assured that the regulatory body would remain independent. The IOC’s reaction remains uncertain as the bill awaits parliamentary approval.
Milestones and Global Recognition
Indian sports achieved notable milestones in 2024. Randhir Singh became the first Indian elected president of the Olympic Council of Asia. Nita Ambani was re-elected as an independent IOC member, and Abhinav Bindra received the prestigious Olympic Order.
Looking Ahead
The coming years will determine the success of India’s Olympic bid. Countries like Poland, Qatar, and Indonesia are also contenders for the 2036 Games. Under the IOC’s reformed host selection process, India must progress through stages of dialogue and feasibility studies before becoming a preferred host.
By 2026, the final decision on the 2036 host will reveal whether India’s ambitious dream becomes a reality. Meanwhile, resolving internal conflicts and sustaining reforms will remain critical for Indian sports.
