India has officially received an extradition request for Sheikh Hasina from Bangladesh. This was confirmed by the Ministry of External Affairs on Friday.
Randhir Jaiswal, the MEA spokesperson, stated in a weekly briefing, “We confirmed receiving the request from Bangladesh for Hasina’s extradition. I have no further comments.”
This request follows a diplomatic note sent by Bangladesh’s interim government under Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus. They want Hasina back in Bangladesh.
Hasina, now 77, has lived in India since fleeing on August 5. This was after massive student protests ended her 16-year reign. She faces numerous legal challenges, including crimes against humanity.
Bangladesh’s International Crimes Tribunal has issued arrest warrants. These are not just for Hasina but also for ex-ministers and officials.
Jaiswal also urged for fairness. “We expect those arrested in Bangladesh to receive a fair trial,” he emphasized.
