The number of registered voters in Delhi has surged to 1.55 crore, marking a notable increase from 1.47 crore in January 2024. The office of the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of Delhi published the final electoral roll on Monday, highlighting an unusual spike in voter registrations.
According to the report, Delhi now has 83.49 lakh male, 71.73 lakh female, and 1,261 third-gender voters, who are expected to cast their votes in the upcoming February Assembly elections.
Unprecedented Spike in New Voter Registrations
The CEO’s office reported receiving over 5.1 lakh Form-6 applications for new voter registrations within just 20 days, starting from December 16, 2024.
“This sudden surge in applications is unexpected and requires greater scrutiny,” stated the CEO’s office. The officials added that 3.08 lakh new voters were added since the draft roll publication on October 29, 2024.
The CEO’s office has directed electoral officers to conduct 100% field verification for new applications. Eight FIRs have been filed against 24 people for submitting false documents to obtain voter IDs.
BJP vs AAP Over Voter Roll Manipulation
The issue of voter registration has sparked a political row between the BJP and AAP. The AAP accused the BJP of orchestrating the wrongful deletion of its supporters from the voter list, while the BJP alleged that the AAP is trying to add fake voters, including Rohingyas and Bangladeshis, to the electoral roll.
However, election officials have denied the allegations, asserting that due process is followed for both additions and deletions in the voter list.

The statement also noted that claims and objections continue to be processed even after the formal deadline, and the process of voter roll revision is ongoing.
The special summary revision (SSR) process for the 2025 electoral roll began in August 2024, with the draft roll published on October 29, 2024. After reviewing claims and objections, the final roll was published on January 6, 2025.
