Actress Kangana Ranaut is busy promoting her upcoming movie Emergency. She recently revealed that she invited politician Priyanka Gandhi Vadra to watch the film.
The movie focuses on the 21-month Emergency period from 1975 to 1977. This was when former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi declared a state of emergency, citing internal and external threats.
Kangana, who plays Indira Gandhi in the film, spoke to IANS ahead of its January 17 release. She shared, “I met Priyanka Gandhi in parliament. The first thing I told her was, ‘You should watch Emergency.’ She was very gracious and said, ‘Yeah, maybe.’ Let’s see if they decide to watch it.”
The actress stressed that the portrayal of Indira Gandhi is sensitive and dignified. She said, “I did extensive research and noticed much focus on her personal life. There was material about her relationships, controversies, and sensational stories. But I chose to present her with dignity and care.”
Kangana added, “Women, especially, are often reduced to their relationships with men. But there’s so much more to every person. I made sure the portrayal reflects that.”
She also highlighted Indira Gandhi’s popularity, saying, “Despite some controversial events, she was deeply loved and celebrated. Being a three-time Prime Minister is no small achievement.”
Kangana hopes her film will resonate with audiences and provide a nuanced view of Indira Gandhi’s legacy.
