Delhi Records 57.89% Voter Turnout, Political Tensions Rise
Delhi witnessed a 57.89% voter turnout in the single-phase assembly election on Wednesday. The final percentage may increase as officials update figures from all 13,766 polling stations.
AAP and BJP Trade Allegations
Polling ended with AAP and BJP accusing each other of distributing money and orchestrating bogus voting. High drama unfolded in Seelampur, where a BJP leader claimed that individuals in burqas were attempting fraudulent voting. However, Delhi Police dismissed these claims, stating that security was adequate.
In Kasturba Nagar, authorities detained two men for alleged fraudulent voting attempts. Officials are currently investigating the incident.
Exit Polls Predict BJP’s Lead
Exit poll results started pouring in soon after voting ended. Most pollsters predict a victory for the BJP, while the AAP is projected to fall short of a third consecutive term. The Congress is expected to face another setback.
Here’s what different exit polls suggest:
Pollster | BJP Seats | AAP Seats |
---|---|---|
Chanakya Strategies | 39-44 | 25-28 |
Matrize | Close contest | Close contest |
WeePreside | AAP win | – |
Mind Brink | AAP win | – |
In 2020, AAP won 62 out of 70 seats, while BJP secured only eight. Congress failed to win any.
Peaceful Polling Amid Lower Turnout
Despite allegations and political tensions, voting remained peaceful. The Election Commission described the process as smooth and festive, with voters appreciating the arrangements.
However, the turnout dropped by five percentage points compared to the 62.59% recorded in 2020.
With exit poll predictions favoring BJP, all eyes are now on the official results, which will be declared on February 8.
