Manipur CM N Biren Singh Resigns, BJP Begins Internal Talks
A day after Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh resigned, BJP in-charge Sambit Patra held closed-door meetings with key party legislators in Imphal. Sources say these discussions focused on the next leadership move, with more meetings expected in the coming 48 hours.
Meanwhile, security has been intensified across the state capital, especially in sensitive areas like Sanjenthong, Singjamei, Moirangkhom, Keisampat, and Kangla Gate.
Congress Reacts: No to President’s Rule
Manipur Congress President K Meghachandra welcomed Singh’s resignation but strongly opposed any move to impose President’s Rule.
“We want a new leader and a new government, not President’s Rule. The people’s mandate must be respected,” Meghachandra stated.
He further accused Singh of failing to handle the state’s crisis, adding that the former CM resigned only because he would have lost a no-confidence motion in the assembly.
Political Unrest and Singh’s Exit
Singh had been under pressure for months amid ongoing ethnic violence that erupted in May 2023. His resignation followed a recent Supreme Court order for a forensic report on leaked audio tapes. These tapes allegedly suggested that Singh allowed Meitei groups to loot arms during the unrest.
Singh’s Resignation Letter
In his resignation, Singh wrote:
“It has been an honor to serve the people of Manipur. I am grateful to the central government for its interventions and projects aimed at safeguarding Manipur’s interests.”
He urged the Centre to continue efforts to secure Manipur’s borders, deport illegal immigrants, and combat narco-terrorism.
What’s Next for Manipur?
With over 250 deaths and thousands displaced since May 2023, Singh’s exit is seen as a step toward stabilizing the state. BJP sources hope his resignation will help peace talks between the two warring ethnic communities.
Now, all eyes are on the BJP leadership to decide who will be Manipur’s next chief minister.
