Darbhanga Mayor Anjum Ara has issued a statement ahead of Holi on March 14, which falls on a Friday during Ramzan. She urged residents to pause Holi celebrations from 12:30 to 2:00 PM to respect Jumma prayers, stating, “Jumma time cannot be extended, so there should be a two-hour break on Holi.”
She also requested people to avoid mosques and places of worship during this time. The district administration made this appeal after a peace committee meeting to ensure harmony during the overlapping festivals.
Peace Committee Discusses Festival Coordination
Ara emphasized that Holi and Ramzan have coincided before and were always celebrated peacefully in the district. The authorities aim to maintain the same spirit of mutual respect this year.
Meanwhile, in Sambhal, Uttar Pradesh, a similar discussion took place. Circle Officer Anuj Kumar Chaudhary advised those uncomfortable with colors to stay indoors during Holi. He pointed out that Holi happens once a year, while there are 52 Jummas annually.
“We have requested the Muslim community to stay at home if they don’t want to get colored. And if they step out, they should be big-hearted enough to not object if color falls on them,” Chaudhary told reporters.
Ensuring Harmony During Celebrations
Authorities in both districts aim to balance cultural traditions and religious practices through mutual understanding. With both Holi and Ramzan being significant for their respective communities, the focus remains on celebrating peacefully and respecting each other’s sentiments.
