Punjab Govt Plans ₹1,000 Monthly Aid for Women
The AAP government in Punjab is gearing up to announce a ₹1,000 monthly financial grant for women. The plan is being actively discussed among top party strategists and officials from the Department of Social Security and Development of Women and Children. However, due to the scheme’s significant financial burden, the government is exploring ways to secure necessary funds.
Budget Constraints Delay Rollout
AAP had promised this financial assistance for women aged 18 and above before the 2022 Assembly elections. To implement the scheme, the government needs ₹1,010 crore every month to support around 1.01 crore eligible women. Given Punjab’s financial situation, launching the scheme in its full form seems challenging.
Who Will Get the Benefit?
Sources indicate that the honorarium may not be universal. The government is discussing whether to limit it to:
- Women from economically weaker sections
- Non-income tax payees
- Women who are sole breadwinners of their families
Political Pressure on AAP
AAP has been pushing the BJP-led Delhi government on its “Mahila Samriddhi Yojana”, which provides ₹2,500 per month to women in the national capital. Facing political criticism for the delay in Punjab, the party wants to fulfill its election promise and prove its credibility to voters.
The final decision on the scheme is expected to be announced in the upcoming Budget session.
