AAP Denies Kejriwal’s Rajya Sabha Move Amid Sanjeev Arora’s Bypoll Candidacy
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has nominated Rajya Sabha MP Sanjeev Arora for the Ludhiana West assembly bypoll, leading to speculation that Arvind Kejriwal may take his seat in the Upper House. However, AAP has dismissed such reports, insisting that Kejriwal is focused on national politics.
The Ludhiana West seat fell vacant after the death of AAP MLA Gurpreet Gogi in an accidental firing incident last month. If Arora wins the bypoll and chooses to continue as an MLA, he must resign from the Rajya Sabha, potentially opening up a seat for Kejriwal, whose recent poll defeat ended his Delhi Assembly membership.
AAP Dismisses Speculation on Kejriwal’s Future Role
Party spokesperson Priyanka Kakkar denied any such move, calling media reports “absolutely wrong.”
“Arvind Kejriwal is not going to the Rajya Sabha. Earlier, sources claimed he would become Punjab’s Chief Minister. Now, they suggest he will enter Parliament. Both claims are false. Kejriwal is AAP’s national convenor, and his leadership is not restricted to any single seat,” she said.
Accepting the Ludhiana West ticket, Sanjeev Arora expressed gratitude to the AAP leadership but did not mention Kejriwal.
“Humbled and grateful to AAP for trusting me to contest the Ludhiana West bypoll. As someone deeply connected to my hometown, I look forward to serving my people with dedication and sincerity,” he posted online.
What’s Next for Kejriwal?
While AAP denies Kejriwal’s potential Rajya Sabha entry, sources indicate that Arora may receive a ministerial post in the Bhagwant Mann government as a reward for vacating his seat.
With Delhi no longer an option, Punjab remains Kejriwal’s strongest base after AAP lost power in the capital. Since resigning as Chief Minister, he has been staying at Punjab MP Ashok Mittal’s house in Delhi.
Meanwhile, with Atishi becoming Leader of the Opposition in the Delhi Assembly, Kejriwal has greater flexibility to focus on national politics. Earlier speculation suggested he might take over as Punjab Chief Minister, but Bhagwant Mann dismissed the idea with a laugh.
For now, AAP insists that Kejriwal’s political future is beyond a single seat, but the developments in Punjab remain crucial to his next move.
