MAIDS to Launch Tissue Bank
The Maulana Azad Institute of Dental Sciences (MAIDS) will launch a tissue bank this year. This initiative, announced in 2019, will make MAIDS the first Delhi government hospital to have such a facility.
The tissue bank will provide freeze-dried bone and skin grafts for transplants. It aims to reduce treatment costs significantly. The project is led by Dr. Arundeep Kaur, head of the periodontics department.
Addressing Healthcare Needs
Dr. Farrukh Faraz, associate professor at MAIDS, stated the bank would help treat periodontal diseases and patients with tumors or injuries. The hospital currently handles around 400 such cases every month.
Previously, MAIDS relied on international sources for grafts, costing ₹20,000-25,000 for a small amount. Producing grafts locally will reduce costs to ₹300, improving accessibility and affordability for patients.
Unique Approach to Tissue Donation
Unlike cadaver-based tissue banks, MAIDS will use grafts from live donors. Bone fragments discarded during orthopedic surgeries, like hip replacements, will be sterilized and preserved.
Lok Nayak Hospital, known for its high number of orthopedic surgeries, will be a consistent donor source. This will ensure a steady supply of bone grafts for the tissue bank.
Pioneering Effort in Delhi
MAIDS joins prestigious institutions like AIIMS Delhi, which has a bone and skin bank, and Safdarjung Hospital, which runs a skin bank. The initiative marks a significant step forward in making advanced treatments affordable for Delhi residents.
