Kejriwal Promises Free Bus Rides and Metro Discounts for Students
AAP national convener Arvind Kejriwal announced new travel benefits for students. He promised free bus rides for male school and college students and a 50% concession on Metro fares for all students. Kejriwal urged the Centre to share the costs of this initiative equally with the Delhi government.
Speaking at the AAP headquarters, Kejriwal highlighted the current policy of free bus travel for women. He noted that female students benefit from this policy, but male students do not. “We will extend this to male students as well,” he said.
Kejriwal emphasized that Metro travel is essential for many students but has become unaffordable. “The Delhi Metro is a joint venture between the Delhi government and the Centre. We share profits, losses, and investments equally. I have written to the Prime Minister, requesting a 50% fare concession for students, with costs shared equally by both governments,” he stated.
The Delhi government already provides free bus travel for women, a promise fulfilled in 2020. Kejriwal said these new measures aim to reduce financial burdens on students and ensure uninterrupted education access.
He urged the Prime Minister to accept this proposal and assured that free bus travel for students would begin after elections. “We hope to implement the Metro fare concession as well,” he added.
AAP has also announced other welfare schemes, including ₹2,100 monthly under the Mahila Samman Yojana, free healthcare for senior citizens, and financial aid for priests. Kejriwal questioned the BJP’s stance on these promises. “Will the BJP include such measures in their manifesto? If not, why should students vote for them?” he asked.
Delhi BJP has yet to respond to these developments.
