AAP Responds to Shivraj Singh Chouhan’s Letter on Farmers’ Plight
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has strongly countered Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan’s recent letter addressing the “plight of farmers” in Delhi. AAP’s national convenor, Arvind Kejriwal, pointed out that while Chouhan highlighted issues in Delhi, farmers in Punjab have been on an indefinite hunger strike for days, demanding the implementation of agreements made by the Central Government three years ago, which have yet to be honored.
Chouhan’s Accusations
In his letter to Delhi CM Atishi, Chouhan criticized the AAP government, accusing it of being “indifferent” to farmers’ issues. He claimed that under Arvind Kejriwal’s leadership, the Delhi government has repeatedly deceived farmers and shown a lack of empathy.
Kejriwal Hits Back
Responding to Chouhan’s claims, Kejriwal took to social media, denouncing the BJP government’s failure to keep its promises. He wrote, “Farmers in Punjab have been sitting on dharna and indefinite hunger strike for many days. Their demands are the same which the central government had accepted three years ago but has not implemented yet. The BJP government is now reneging on its promise. The BJP government is not even talking to the farmers. Talk to them. They are the farmers of our own country. Why is the BJP so arrogant that it does not even talk to anyone?”
He further emphasized that if anything happens to the farmers in Punjab, the BJP would be held responsible for ignoring their concerns.
Minister Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa’s Reaction
Punjab Cooperation and Jails Minister, Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa, also weighed in on the matter. He suggested that Chouhan’s letter should have been directed to the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, where he claimed the condition of farmers was worse. Randhawa urged the BJP to address the issues of farmers protesting in Delhi.
Alleged Reintroduction of Farm Laws
Kejriwal also voiced concerns about the BJP government potentially reintroducing the three controversial farm laws, which were withdrawn after nationwide protests. He alleged that the Centre was planning to reintroduce the laws through a backdoor by calling them “policies.” Kejriwal claimed that the Centre had already sent a copy of this policy to the states, seeking their feedback.
The three farm laws had sparked massive protests across India in 2019-2020, before being rolled back by the BJP government due to mounting pressure from farmers.
Kejriwal’s remarks underscore the ongoing tension between the BJP and AAP, with both parties seeking to position themselves as champions of farmer interests in the lead-up to upcoming elections.
