Kejriwal Launches Welfare Scheme
Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Arvind Kejriwal officially launched the ‘Pujari-Granthi Samman Yojana’ on Tuesday. The event began with Kejriwal and his wife visiting the Marghat Wale Baba Temple at ISBT. They offered prayers and sought Lord Hanuman’s blessings. Kejriwal also registered the temple’s Mahant under the scheme, marking its state-wide rollout.
What Is the Scheme?
The ‘Pujari-Granthi Samman Yojana’ promises a monthly honorarium of ₹18,000 to Hindu temple priests and Gurudwara granthis in Delhi. Kejriwal, addressing the media on Monday, said, “Pujaris and granthis are vital to our society but often overlooked. For the first time in India, we are introducing a scheme to support them financially.”
Opposition Reactions
The scheme sparked mixed reactions. The BJP criticized it as a “political stunt,” while Congress called it “trickery.” Meanwhile, Imams and Muazzins of Waqf Board-registered mosques protested outside Kejriwal’s residence, alleging unpaid salaries for 17 months. The AAP government provides ₹18,000 monthly to Imams and ₹16,000 to Muazzins.
Delhi Assembly Elections 2025
The Delhi Assembly elections are scheduled for February 2025. The AAP government, led by Kejriwal, has been in power since 2020. The tenure of the current Assembly ends on February 15, 2025.
This scheme, launched amid election preparations, highlights AAP’s focus on welfare initiatives while drawing criticism from its rivals.
