Arvind Kejriwal, AAP national convener and former Delhi Chief Minister, extended his support to Omar Abdullah, J&K’s Chief Minister-designate. Speaking at a post-election rally in Doda, Kejriwal offered to assist Abdullah in running Jammu and Kashmir, which he compared to Delhi, referring to both as “half-states” with limited powers.
” Omar Abdullah will take over as the Chief Minister in a few days, and we congratulate him,” Arvind Kejriwal said. He promised full cooperation from AAP to ensure a successful administration under Abdullah’s leadership, bringing progress and prosperity to J&K. Kejriwal also expressed confidence that Mehraj Malik, AAP’s first elected legislator in J&K, would play a key role in the new government.
Kejriwal drew parallels between Delhi and J&K, stating both regions have reduced powers, with much authority held by the Lieutenant Governor. He offered to share his ten years of experience governing Delhi. “If you face any difficulty running the government, just ask me,” Kejriwal said to Omar Abdullah.
Interestingly, AAP had supported the BJP when Articles 370 and 35-A were abrogated, dividing J&K into Union Territories. Kejriwal reiterated his support for Abdullah’s government, hoping Mehraj Malik would be given a significant role.
Mehraj Malik, who won in Doda with a margin of 4,538 votes, surprised many by defeating BJP’s Gajay Singh Rana. Kejriwal praised Malik’s social service background and called for his experience to benefit not only Doda but all of J&K.
Kejriwal addressed Doda’s dire condition, highlighting issues with education, healthcare, roads, and electricity. He promised that AAP’s focus would be on people-centric politics, providing basic necessities like quality education, health services, and affordable utilities. “Doda has planted the seed of AAP in J&K,” Kejriwal said, adding that AAP now has an MLA in five states.
He emphasized that Malik’s victory was based on issues, not religion. “Malik won by focusing on real problems like water, electricity, education, and health,” Kejriwal added, reinforcing AAP’s vision for politics centered around development.
Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann also attended the rally and congratulated the people of Doda for electing Malik. He called it a historic moment for J&K, marking the beginning of a new political era focused on development. Mann recalled how people once mocked AAP’s efforts but noted that public support is the real power in a democracy.
Mann concluded by stressing that Arvind Kejriwal represents more than just a party; he embodies an ideology of change and governance centered on the people’s welfare.
