Kejriwal’s Seven Guarantees for Delhi’s Dhobis
Aam Aadmi Party chief Arvind Kejriwal on Tuesday announced seven key guarantees for Delhi’s Dhobi community, promising comprehensive support to uplift their livelihoods and socio-economic condition.
Key Promises for the Dhobi Community
- Welfare Board: Kejriwal pledged to establish a Dhobi Samuday Welfare Board to address the community’s concerns and formulate beneficial policies.
- Domestic Electricity and Water Rates: Dhobis will no longer pay commercial rates for electricity and water; these will be converted to domestic rates.
- Regularisation of Ironing Shops: Makeshift ironing shops across Delhi will be regularised, ensuring an end to harassment from authorities.
- Licensing Process Resumed: The halted licensing process for Dhobis will restart, bringing stability to their profession.
- Elderly Welfare Schemes: Welfare schemes tailored for the elderly members of the Dhobi community will be introduced.
- Education and Scholarships: Children from the Dhobi community will receive quality education and scholarships.
- Skill Training for Youths: Training programs for traditional and alternative trades will help improve livelihoods.
Kejriwal’s Vision for the Dhobi Community
Addressing a press conference, Kejriwal highlighted the challenges faced by the Dhobis, emphasizing their need for a unified platform. He said, “The Dhobi Samuday Welfare Board will act as a single platform where the community can raise issues and suggest improvements.”
He also criticized the current system of charging Dhobis commercial rates for utilities, calling it unfair. “Dhobis earn very little and face high expenses. Converting their utility rates to domestic ones will ease their burden,” Kejriwal added.
Community Support
Ravi Kumar, president of the Delhi Dhobi Mahasabha, expressed gratitude for the proposed measures. “The Dhobi Samuday Welfare Board will serve as a single-window system, offering access to government policies. We are thankful to Arvind Kejriwal for this initiative,” he said.
With these promises, Kejriwal aims to bring tangible improvements to the lives of thousands of Dhobis in the national capital, reaffirming AAP’s commitment to inclusive governance.
