Union Minister Ramdas Athawale endorsed Devendra Fadnavis as the next Chief Minister of Maharashtra on Tuesday. He proposed that Eknath Shinde either serve as Deputy CM or join the Union Cabinet under PM Modi.
Shinde’s Reaction
Athawale revealed that Eknath Shinde felt “unhappy” after learning about the BJP’s decision to finalize Fadnavis for the top post. He stated, “Shinde is upset, but BJP’s 132 seats justify Fadnavis becoming CM. Shinde can take a role in the Union government.”
Shinde Steps Down
Eknath Shinde resigned as Maharashtra CM on Tuesday. Governor CP Radhakrishnan asked him to act as a caretaker until the new government is formed. However, the Mahayuti alliance, including BJP, Shinde’s Shiv Sena faction, and Ajit Pawar’s NCP faction, has not finalized the leadership.
Athawale’s Appeal
Athawale urged the BJP leadership to quickly resolve the deadlock after consulting Fadnavis, Shinde, and Pawar. He emphasized the people’s preference for Fadnavis as CM.
Shinde Urges Calm
Meanwhile, Shinde appealed to his supporters not to gather in Mumbai or show public support. In a social media post, he thanked them for their love but requested them to avoid any such action.
Election Results
The BJP emerged as the single largest party in Maharashtra, winning 132 of 288 seats. Its allies, Shiv Sena (57 seats) and NCP (41 seats), also performed well. The elections took place on November 20, and results were announced on November 23.
The Mahayuti alliance has pledged to stay united after their victory, as they prepare to form the new government
