Early Life and Education
Born in June 1981, Atishi is the daughter of Delhi University professors Vijay Singh and Tripta Wahi. She earned a History degree from St. Stephen’s College of Delhi and completed her Master’s at Oxford University in 2003 on a Chevening Scholarship. She later studied as a Rhodes scholar at Magdalen College.
Before joining AAP, Atishi had spent some time teaching history and English at Rishi Valley School in Andhra Pradesh.
Career in AAP
Atishi is a founding member of AAP, She initially worked on education policies. She spent years in rural area of Madhya Pradesh focusing on organic farming and progressive education.
In 2015, she became an advisor to former Deputy CM and education Minister Manish Sisodia and introduced the “Happiness Curriculum” in Delhi government schools. She entered into active politics by contesting the 2019 Lok Sabha elections but lost to cricketer turned politician and BJP candidate Gautam Gambhir.
Political Success
In 2020, Atishi won her first Assembly election from Kalkaji, defeating BJP’s Dharambir Singh by a margin of 11,000 votes. She was appointed as AAP’s spokesperson in 2018 and became more influential after Manish Sisodia’s arrest in the liquor policy case.
Her political portfolio expanded as she took charge of education, finance, and public works. She became Delhi’s third woman Chief Minister, following Sushma Swaraj of BJP and Sheila Dikshit of Congress.
