Bangladesh Cancels Journalist Access to Secretariat Over Security Issues
Bangladesh interim government has revoked journalist accreditation cards, restricting their entry to the Secretariat. The decision, announced by the home ministry on Friday, is reportedly due to safety and security concerns.
The Secretariat, located in Segunbagicha, Dhaka, serves as the administrative hub for most government ministries and agencies. Normally, the Press Information Department (PID) issues accreditation cards for journalists to collect news.
Reason for the Restriction
Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus’ office stated that the move ensures the safety of the Key Point Installation (KPI), recently affected by a major fire.
“The decision prioritizes the security of the Secretariat. The government will review the existing press cards and process new applications for updated accreditation,” said an official statement.
Temporary Measures for Press Events
Until the review process concludes, ministries will issue temporary daily passes for journalists attending press events. The government expressed regret over the inconvenience and requested cooperation from the media.
This decision follows the formation of an interim government under Nobel Laureate Muhammad Yunus after Sheikh Hasina’s ouster amid widespread protests. The press restrictions highlight ongoing efforts to stabilize the administrative framework during the transition.
Stay tuned for updates as the government reviews its press accreditation policies.
