In a dramatic development, Bangladesh’s Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has stepped down and left the country amid widespread protests.
Reports from local media indicate that Hasina departed on a military helicopter after protesters defied a national curfew and stormed the prime minister’s residence in Dhaka.
Weeks of unrest have resulted in over 300 deaths, with authorities struggling to control the situation. Tensions remained high on Monday, following a night of deadly violence that claimed over 100 lives on Sunday. Protesters were planning a march on Dhaka while the army was preparing to address the nation.
The atmosphere shifted to celebration as news of Hasina’s resignation spread.
General Waker-Uz-Zaman, the Chief of Army Staff, addressed the nation, asking citizens to trust the military to restore peace. He assured the public that all recent killings would be investigated.
He confirmed the prime minister’s resignation and announced that an interim government would take over. He also mentioned that he would soon meet with the president to discuss the next steps for the country.
