BJP Sends Jalebis to Rahul Gandhi After Haryana Election Win
New Delhi: The BJP’s Haryana unit marked a historic win in the Assembly elections with an unusual celebration—by sending jalebis to Congress MP Rahul Gandhi. This gesture wasn’t a friendly one, but rather a playful jab at his recent remarks about jalebis during his campaign.
Why Jalebis?
While campaigning in Gohana, Haryana, Rahul Gandhi had highlighted the popularity of the local jalebis, which are sold across the country and even exported. He claimed that small businesses, including jalebi sellers, had been hurt by the central government’s GST system, which has impacted their livelihood.
In response, BJP leaders mocked his comments. Former Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad commented, “I also like Gohana jalebi… but one must understand how they are made and sold.” He criticized Gandhi for not doing his research, calling him “clueless” about the preparation of the famous sweet dish.
Jalebis Delivered to Congress HQ
To emphasize their point, the BJP posted on X (formerly Twitter) that they had sent a kilogram of jalebis to Rahul Gandhi’s office in Delhi. The sweets were delivered to the Congress headquarters at 24, Akbar Road. A screenshot from a food delivery app confirmed the order, with the BJP proudly claiming the gesture was made on behalf of all its Haryana workers.
Jalebis in Politics
Interestingly, Gandhi wasn’t the only politician to reference jalebis in the political discourse this year. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also mentioned them while questioning the opposition INDIA bloc’s plan to rotate the Prime Minister’s position annually. “Is the Prime Minister’s post like our Matu Ram ki jalebi?” he quipped, referring to the famous sweet made in Gohana.
Gohana jalebis, first made in 1958 by local businessman Matu Ram, remain an iconic delicacy today. Made from pure desi ghee, each jalebi weighs about 250 grams, and a box of four costs ₹320, according to his grandson Raman Gupta, who now runs the family business.
The BJP’s playful jab using jalebis has added a unique twist to the post-election political conversation.
