The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has strongly criticized Rahul Gandhi for leaving the country to celebrate the New Year in Vietnam. This trip took place just days after the death of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. BJP leaders accused Gandhi of disrespecting the late leader and being insensitive to the nation’s mourning.
BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla alleged that Congress had consistently insulted Manmohan Singh, even during his lifetime. He pointed out that the party denied Singh the Bharat Ratna and continued to show disregard by not prioritizing his legacy after his death. He added that no Congress leader accompanied Singh’s family to collect his ashes, further showcasing the party’s indifference.
Amit Malviya, another BJP leader, accused Rahul Gandhi of exploiting Singh’s death for political purposes. He alleged that Gandhi’s trip to Vietnam demonstrated contempt and recalled past incidents where Gandhi prioritized leisure over national concerns. Malviya also accused the Congress party of harboring a history of disrespect toward the Sikh community.
In response, Congress MP Manickam Tagore dismissed the BJP’s allegations as diversion tactics. He defended Rahul Gandhi’s private travel, stating it was irrelevant to national mourning. Tagore criticized the government for denying Singh a burial site near the Yamuna banks, calling it a disgraceful act.
Manmohan Singh, who passed away at 92, was cremated at Delhi’s Nigambodh Ghat. His death has sparked a heated political exchange between the BJP and Congress, with both sides leveling accusations at each other.
