BJP Reveals First Set of Delhi Poll Candidates
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Saturday announced its first list of 29 candidates for the Delhi Assembly elections in February.
Former West Delhi MP Parvesh Verma will challenge AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal in the New Delhi constituency. Meanwhile, former South Delhi MP Ramesh Bidhuri will contest against Chief Minister Atishi in Kalkaji. Kailash Gahlot, an ex-AAP minister, is fielded from Bijwasan instead of Najafgarh, his usual stronghold.
The BJP dropped Gandhi Nagar MLA Anil Bajpayee and replaced him with former Delhi Congress chief Arvinder Singh Lovely.
Complete List of BJP Candidates
The BJP initially planned to release this list in late December. Prime Minister Narendra Modi was expected to lead the Central Election Committee meeting. However, internal discussions and a “lack of options” for some seats delayed the announcement.
Sources suggest the delay also involved leadership changes. The party may appoint a working president from the SC, ST, or OBC community to strengthen its base. Speculation grew after recent parliamentary debates on Dr. B.R. Ambedkar.
Opposition Gears Up
In contrast, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has already declared candidates for all 70 seats. The Congress has named 21 candidates, with more announcements expected soon.
