The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has announced its first list of 99 candidates for the Maharashtra Assembly elections. Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis will contest from Nagpur South West, his long-standing stronghold.
Maharashtra BJP president Chandrashekhar Bawankule will run from Kamthi. Shrijaya Chavan, daughter of BJP leader Ashok Chavan, has been nominated for the Bhokar seat.
Other notable candidates include Mumbai BJP president Ashish Shelar, who will contest from Vandre West. Nitesh Rane, son of senior leader Narayan Rane, is fielded from Kankavli, a seat he currently holds. Additionally, Girish Mahajan will contest from Jamner, Sudhir Mungantiwar from Ballarpur, Mangal Prabhat Lodha from Malabar Hill, Rahul Narwekar from Colaba, and Chhatrapati Shivendra Raje Bhosale from Satara.
Maharashtra will hold elections for all 288 assembly seats on November 20, with results expected on November 23.
The Mahayuti alliance, including the BJP, Eknath Shinde’s Shiv Sena, and Ajit Pawar’s Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), is yet to finalize their seat-sharing agreement. BJP is eyeing around 150 seats but faces tough negotiations with its partners.
In the 2019 elections, the BJP secured 105 seats, while Shiv Sena won 56 and Congress took 44. In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, however, BJP-led Mahayuti won only 17 of Maharashtra’s 48 seats, while the Congress-led Maharashtra Vikas Aghadi (MVA) won 30 seats.
