Why Are Bypolls Being Held?
The Milkipur bypoll was triggered by Samajwadi Party leader Awadhesh Prasad’s resignation, while the Erode (East) seat fell vacant after the death of Congress MLA EVKS Elangovan.
However, several other bypolls remain pending. These include:
- Budgam and Nagrota (Jammu & Kashmir)
- Visavadar (Gujarat)
- Basirhat (West Bengal)
Addressing the delay, Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar clarified that elections in Jammu & Kashmir were postponed due to snow conditions.
“We will complete the J&K bypolls before April,” he assured.
In Gujarat and West Bengal, pending election petitions have delayed bypolls in Visavadar and Basirhat. Kumar explained that elections cannot be conducted if petitions are pending.
