CBI’s Delay in Court Sparks Anger Over Kolkata Rape-Murder Case
A Kolkata court expressed frustration over the CBI’s handling of the high-profile rape and murder case of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College. The investigating officer’s absence and a 40-minute delay by the agency’s lawyer prompted the court to question the CBI’s commitment, with the magistrate even considering granting bail to the main accused, Sanjay Roy.
Court Criticizes CBI’s “Lethargic Attitude”
During the bail hearing on Friday, Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Pamela Gupta was informed that the CBI’s investigating officer was absent. As Roy’s lawyer argued for bail, the court was further delayed when the public prosecutor arrived 40 minutes late. Frustrated, Magistrate Gupta remarked, “Should I grant bail to Sanjay Roy? This reflects a severely lethargic attitude by the CBI.”
Despite the delay, Roy was sent to judicial custody for 14 days, but the court’s strong criticism has sparked outrage.

Trinamool Congress Slams CBI and BJP
The Trinamool Congress, which has been facing its own scrutiny over handling the case, quickly seized the opportunity to attack the CBI and the BJP. Trinamool leader Chandrima Bhattacharya expressed concern, stating, “It has been over 24 days since the CBI took over the case, and still, nothing. This shows the agency is not taking the case seriously.”
In a series of posts on social media, the Trinamool Congress further accused the CBI and BJP of sabotaging justice, calling their inaction an “insult to the victim” and questioning their commitment to accountability.
Public Outrage Grows
The horrific crime took place on August 9, when the body of a trainee doctor was discovered in a seminar hall at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The autopsy revealed multiple injuries inflicted before she was smothered to death.
The delay in proceedings has only fueled public outrage, with many demanding faster action and accountability from the CBI, as the nation watches for justice to be served.
