Ahead of the Bihar Assembly elections later this year, the Centre has announced major initiatives for the politically crucial state. The BJP, which shares power with its key ally Nitish Kumar’s JDU, unveiled these offerings to strengthen its position.
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, during her eighth consecutive Budget speech, revealed several projects for Bihar. She announced the establishment of a Makhana board to support farmers in north Bihar. This board will help Makhana growers access central government schemes. The announcement was met with loud cheers from the treasury benches.
Additionally, Bihar is set to receive greenfield airports as part of a push to boost civil aviation. Sitharaman also announced a canal project for the Mithilanchal region. In the education sector, she highlighted plans to expand the capacity of the Indian Institute of Technology in Patna.
These initiatives come months before the crucial Assembly polls in Bihar. Nitish Kumar, who has switched political alliances multiple times but retained his position as Chief Minister, is preparing for another electoral battle. His party, the JDU, won 12 seats in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. The BJP, falling short of a majority, relied on JDU and N Chandrababu Naidu’s TDP to form the government.
The Opposition criticized the Centre’s focus on Bihar. Senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh questioned why Andhra Pradesh, another NDA ally, was overlooked. He said, “Bihar appears to have received a bonanza of announcements, likely due to the upcoming elections. But why has Andhra Pradesh been ignored so cruelly?”
These announcements underscore the BJP’s efforts to secure its alliance with JDU and ensure a strong performance in the Bihar Assembly polls.
