New Delhi: Champai Soren, a prominent leader of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) and former Chief Minister of Jharkhand, is currently on his way to Delhi, according to sources. This visit has ignited widespread speculation of a possible political shift to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) as the Jharkhand assembly elections approach.
Reports suggest that Soren met with BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari in Kolkata yesterday. Accompanying him on this significant trip to the capital are four other JMM leaders, heightening the political chatter surrounding his movements.
Despite the swirling rumors, Champai Soren has publicly dismissed any claims of an impending defection. “I am unaware of these speculations and reports… I am where I have always been,” he clarified on Saturday.

Soren assumed the role of Jharkhand’s Chief Minister in February after the Enforcement Directorate arrested Hemant Soren in connection with a high-profile money laundering case. However, his tenure as the 12th Chief Minister was short-lived, as he stepped down in July, allowing Hemant Soren to return to his position.
The timing of Champai Soren’s visit to Delhi has added fuel to the speculations, especially since he is scheduled to meet with BJP leaders during his stay. This development follows his recent encounter with former JMM legislator Lobin Hembrom, who is also reportedly in talks with BJP leaders. However, Soren downplayed this meeting, describing it as a routine discussion. Hembrom was recently disqualified as a JMM MLA under the anti-defection law.
In recent developments, the BJP held meetings with district heads in Jharkhand, attended by key leaders like Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan. However, when questioned about the possibility of Champai Soren joining the BJP, Sarma remained non-committal. “No one has reached out to us yet. I am also hearing these reports from the media. Champai Soren is a respected leader, and I prefer not to speculate informally about him,” he stated.
Former Jharkhand BJP President and Rajya Sabha MP Deepak Prakash echoed a similar stance, noting that any decision regarding Soren’s inclusion in the BJP would be made by the central leadership. “I’ve only heard these reports. I don’t have any verified information… He served Jharkhand well as Chief Minister… Ultimately, the decision lies with the central leadership,” Prakash commented.
