Clash During Diwali Celebrations at Jamia Millia Islamia
On Tuesday night, a clash erupted on the Jamia Millia Islamia campus during Diwali celebrations. Two groups confronted each other, prompting the deployment of police outside the university.
According to a video circulating online, a group allegedly chanted slogans during the Diwali event. Some students claimed that people were chanting “Palestine Zindabad,” disrupting the celebrations. However, these claims remain unverified.
The incident occurred during an annual Diwali program organized by the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), a student wing of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The trouble reportedly started when a group allegedly damaged rangolis and kicked diyas, leading to a clash between the two groups. The altercation happened near Gate No. 7 of the university around 7:30-8 p.m.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Southeast) Ravi Kumar confirmed the incident. He explained that ABVP-affiliated students were decorating the area with rangolis and diyas, which upset another group. This led to a confrontation, with both sides engaging in sloganeering.
Videos shared on social media show the disruption as people entered the area, triggering a physical confrontation. The ABVP released a statement saying the exact cause of the clash is still under investigation.
The situation was brought under control after security intervened. Police remain stationed outside the campus, and more details are expected to emerge as the investigation continues.
