Historic Meeting in Srinagar
Congress and the National Conference (NC) have confirmed their pre-poll alliance in Jammu and Kashmir. This alliance was finalized after a key meeting at NC leader Farooq Abdullah’s residence in Srinagar. Rahul Gandhi, along with other top leaders, actively participated in this important discussion.
Congress and National Conference Solidify first time since 1987
This is the first time since 1987 that Congress and NC have teamed up before an election in Jammu and Kashmir. Both parties face challenges in seat-sharing but remain committed to working together. Farooq Abdullah confidently stated, “The alliance is finalized and will contest all 90 seats.”

Congress and National Conference Leadership Drives Unity
An hour-long discussion among Rahul Gandhi, Mallikarjun Kharge, and the Abdullahs solidified the alliance. The meeting highlighted the strong will of both parties to contest the assembly elections together. Rahul Gandhi emphasized that respect for Congress workers and leaders is crucial in this partnership.
Seat-Sharing Talks Continue
Both parties have engaged in three rounds of seat-sharing negotiations. The last round ended tensely as both sides firmly held their ground on the number of seats they wanted. They also discussed the possibility of friendly contests in certain constituencies claimed by both sides.
Rahul Gandhi’s Promise of Statehood
Rahul Gandhi, currently on a two-day visit to Jammu and Kashmir, has centered his campaign on restoring statehood. “We want statehood for you. You should govern your state as you wish,” Gandhi affirmed.
Farooq Abdullah Supports Statehood
Farooq Abdullah echoed Gandhi’s focus on statehood. He stressed the need to address the suffering people have endured over the past decade. “Statehood is our primary concern,” Abdullah stated, calling for unity against divisive forces.
Seat-Sharing Challenges
Omar Abdullah acknowledged the complexities of seat-sharing, given the large number of potential candidates from both parties. He admitted that while an agreement is likely, it may not be entirely smooth.
Recent Election Success
In the recent Lok Sabha elections, the Congress-NC alliance secured 41.7% of the vote in Jammu and Kashmir. This result outperformed the BJP and PDP, who received 17% and 8%, respectively.
Upcoming Assembly Elections
Jammu and Kashmir’s assembly elections will occur in three phases on September 18, 25, and October 1. This election will be the first since the abrogation of Article 370 in 2019. The results are expected on October 4.
