The Congress and National Conference (NC) alliance has surged past the halfway mark in Jammu and Kashmir’s first assembly elections in a decade. Early leads show the alliance ahead on 50 seats, while the BJP has secured 28 seats so far. The vote counting started at 8 a.m. under tight security.
These assembly elections, the first since Article 370 was repealed in August 2019, took place across 90 constituencies. Held in three phases—on September 18, September 25, and October 1—the elections saw a voter turnout of 63.88%, according to the Election Commission of India.
The Congress and NC joined forces for the 2024 elections, while the BJP and People’s Democratic Party (PDP) contested separately. This marks a significant moment as the last PDP-BJP coalition fell apart in June 2018, leading to Governor’s Rule under President Ram Nath Kovind.
The Congress-NC alliance is expected to secure the most seats, as exit polls predicted. However, exit polls often carry inaccuracies, so the final results will be revealed later today.
