A court in Mumbai granted bail to Aditya Pandit, the boyfriend of Air India pilot Srishti Tuli, who allegedly committed suicide last month. Tuli, 25, was found dead in her rented flat in the Kanakia Rain Forest building in Marol on November 25.
Pandit, 27, was arrested the following day and charged with abetment of suicide under section 108 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). His bail application was approved by Additional Sessions Judge T.T. Aglawe, though the detailed order is still pending.
According to the complaint filed by Tuli’s father, Pandit and Tuli had been living together for several days before her death. However, Pandit left for Delhi the day Tuli died. The complaint claimed their different food preferences led to frequent arguments. Tuli was a non-vegetarian, while Pandit was a vegetarian. The father alleged that Pandit pressured Tuli to change her diet, possibly contributing to her suicide.
Pandit’s lawyer, Aniket Nikam, disputed the charge of abetment. He argued that arguments between the couple did not indicate criminal intent. “Just because they had disagreements, it doesn’t mean there was any criminal pressure on her,” he said. Nikam added that for abetment to apply, there should be evidence showing Tuli had no other option but to end her life. He pointed out that Tuli was educated and could have left the relationship or filed a complaint if she had been harassed.
Nikam further highlighted the absence of a suicide note and prior complaints. He claimed that the FIR alone did not support the charge of abetment.
Pandit’s bail petition stated that while on his way to Delhi, he called Tuli multiple times but received no response. Concerned, he returned to Mumbai and found the door to her flat locked. After calling a locksmith, he discovered Tuli’s body. He immediately rushed her to the hospital in an attempt to save her life, though it was too late.
Pandit’s lawyer argued that even if all the allegations in the FIR were true, they did not establish a case for abetment of suicide.
