Delhi CM Responds to Tania Sachdev’s Plea for Chess Recognition
A day after chess Olympiad gold medalist and Arjuna awardee Tania Sachdev criticized the Delhi government for neglecting chess achievements, Chief Minister Atishi met her to address the concerns. Atishi called Sachdev an “inspiration to budding chess players” and pledged to promote the sport in Delhi.
A Commitment to Chess Excellence
Atishi shared the meeting’s highlights on X, emphasizing chess as an affordable sport with the power to break cultural barriers. “Tania shared valuable insights on promoting chess in Delhi. We are eager to work with her to advance this cause,” Atishi posted.
The government plans to leverage Sachdev’s expertise to introduce chess to children in government schools. Atishi assured Sachdev that her concerns would be resolved promptly, wishing her success in future endeavors.
Sachdev’s Call for Recognition
Tania Sachdev had voiced her frustration over the Delhi government’s lack of acknowledgment for her achievements. Despite representing Delhi since 2008 and winning historic medals, including a Chess Olympiad gold in 2024, Sachdev noted the absence of recognition.
She stated, “It’s disheartening to see no acknowledgment from the Delhi government. States that celebrate their champions inspire talent and excellence. Sadly, Delhi hasn’t taken this step yet.”
Atishi’s Prompt Response
In response to Sachdev’s comments, Atishi invited her for a discussion. “Hi Tania, we’ve always supported our athletes, especially in schools. I’d love to hear your suggestions for improving support for chess players,” Atishi posted, affirming her government’s commitment to sports development.
Chess Legend’s Achievements
Tania Sachdev has been a trailblazer in Indian chess. She became the eighth Indian woman grandmaster in 2005 and claimed the Indian Women’s Championship title between 2006 and 2008. Recently, she was part of the Indian team that won gold in the women’s event at the 45th Chess Olympiad in Budapest, a historic first for India.
Moving Forward
With this dialogue, Delhi aims to turn Sachdev’s feedback into actionable plans, focusing on nurturing talent and raising awareness about chess across the state. The collaboration signals hope for budding players and a brighter future for chess in Delhi.
