Delhi Health Minister Saurabh Bharadwaj has instructed the health and family welfare department to stay prepared for any rise in respiratory illnesses. His order follows the detection of three human metapneumovirus (HMPV) cases in India.
Bharadwaj stressed that hospitals in the capital must remain alert. He stated that the virus is circulating globally, making Delhi’s preparedness a top priority. He also directed the department to keep close contact with the union health ministry for timely updates.
“All hospitals must stay well-equipped to handle any spike in respiratory illnesses,” Bharadwaj’s statement read. He further instructed the health secretary to track trends and provide regular reports on the city’s preparedness.
The minister ordered physical inspections of three major hospitals every day. He asked for daily updates on ICU beds, medicines, radiology equipment, and staffing at OPD counters.
Bharadwaj also said any urgent matter should be reported to him immediately. This will help avoid delays in action.
The Indian Council of Medical Research recently confirmed two HMPV cases in Karnataka. Both cases involved infants with a history of bronchopneumonia.
A third case was detected in Gujarat. The child, hospitalized on December 24, is currently in stable condition.
With the rising HMPV threat, Delhi’s government is taking no chances. Hospitals are on high alert to prevent any major health crisis.
