Delhi Enforces Work-from-Home Amid Alarming Pollution
The Delhi government has announced that 50% of its employees will work from home. This decision comes as the city struggles with hazardous air quality.
AQI Hits Severe Levels
Air pollution in Delhi-NCR has crossed dangerous levels, with the Air Quality Index (AQI) staying above 450 in several areas. The severe AQI has triggered Stage IV of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP), the most stringent level to counter extreme pollution.
Measures to Curb Pollution
Delhi Environment Minister Gopal Rai shared that a meeting with officials will take place at 1 PM today to discuss implementation. Recently, the government introduced staggered office timings for its offices and the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD).
Vehicle and School Restrictions
The government has banned BS-IV diesel medium and heavy goods vehicles (MGVs and HGVs) and BS-III petrol vehicles, except for essential services. Schools for Classes 10 to 12 have also been temporarily closed to protect students from the harmful air.
Exploring Cloud Seeding
Last year, Delhi partnered with IIT Kanpur to explore cloud seeding as an emergency solution. Preparations for this year’s operations began in August, but further discussions are pending.
