Delhi High Court Criticizes AAP for CAG Report Delay
The Delhi High Court on Monday reprimanded the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government for delaying the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) report. Justice Sachin Datta highlighted that the delay appeared deliberate.
“The way you dragged your feet raises doubts about your intentions,” the court said. The judge noted that the government should have sent the reports to the Speaker without delay and initiated a discussion in the assembly.
The court criticized the government for preventing an assembly session. The judge pointed out that the timeline showed intentional stalling to avoid the session.
In response, the Delhi government questioned how a session could be called with upcoming elections.
BJP Demands Special Session
Previously, BJP MLAs filed a petition asking for a special session to discuss 14 CAG reports. The court then asked the Delhi government and the Speaker to respond.
The Delhi government said it had forwarded all reports to the Speaker. However, the Assembly Secretariat argued that tabling the reports was unnecessary, as the assembly term ends in February.
BJP leader Vijender Gupta argued that MLAs have the right to receive and debate the reports. He urged the court to direct the Speaker to call a special session.
Political Motivations Alleged
The AAP government opposed the petition, calling it politically motivated. The government said it would submit a counter-affidavit.
Gupta’s lawyer clarified that the petition aimed to ensure accountability, not political gains. He stressed that the matter should be resolved before election announcements.
The court emphasized that it couldn’t issue an immediate order to the Speaker without hearing both sides.
