A Dhaka court has ordered the seizure of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s residence, ‘Sudhasadan’ in Dhanmondi, along with several properties owned by her family members living in exile in India.
124 Bank Accounts Frozen
The court has also frozen 124 bank accounts belonging to Hasina’s family. Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Zakir Hossain Ghalib issued the order on Tuesday after reviewing an application by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
Family Assets Under Seizure
The seized properties include assets owned by Hasina’s son, Sajib Wazed Joy, daughter Saima Wazed Putul, sister Sheikh Rehana, and her children, Tulip Siddique and Radwan Mujib Siddique.
Bangladesh Protests Hasina’s Statements
On February 6, Bangladesh’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs lodged a formal protest with the Indian government. The protest note, delivered to India’s Acting High Commissioner in Dhaka, condemned Sheikh Hasina’s statements on various platforms, including social media.
The Bangladeshi government has urged India to take immediate steps to stop Hasina from making “false and incendiary statements” that could fuel instability in the country.
Sheikh Hasina’s Ouster and Exile
On August 5, a student-led movement forced Sheikh Hasina to step down after weeks of violent protests and clashes that left over 600 people dead. She fled to India, and an interim government led by Nobel Laureate Muhammad Yunus took charge.
