DMRC Achieves Milestone with First Driverless Metro Trainset for Phase 4 Expansion
The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has received its first driverless metro trainset as part of the Phase 4 expansion. This marks a historic achievement for the DMRC, as confirmed in an official statement released on Monday.
A Major Milestone for Delhi Metro
DMRC Managing Director Vikas Kumar expressed the significance of this event, stating, “Today is a historic occasion for the Delhi Metro family as we take another major step towards operationalising the Phase 4 corridors.” The first batch of trainsets is being shipped from Alstom’s facility in Sri City, Andhra Pradesh, under the ‘Make in India’ initiative.
Cutting-Edge Driverless Technology
The new trains are equipped with Grade of Automation (GOA) 4 driverless technology. This advanced system is expected to enhance passenger convenience and promote eco-friendly travel across the city. “We are looking forward to a new era of enhanced convenience and eco-friendly travel for our passengers,” Kumar added.
Designed for Speed and Efficiency
These trainsets, capable of reaching a safe speed of 95 km/h and an operational speed of 85 km/h, will serve three key lines in Delhi Metro’s network. This includes two extensions and the newly introduced Gold Line 10, covering a total of 64.67 km.
The project, valued at €312 million, also includes 15 years of maintenance, making it the first time DMRC has outsourced such services to an original equipment manufacturer (OEM).
Alstom’s Commitment to Sustainable Solutions
Alstom Managing Director Olivier Loison emphasized the impact of these metro trainsets on improving the quality of life in Delhi. “We are proud to continue our partnership with DMRC, marking another milestone in our journey of collaboration,” he said. Loison also highlighted the importance of sustainable solutions, stating, “We are committed to creating future-proof solutions that stand the test of time.”
Looking Ahead
The contract, awarded in November 2022, aims to deliver a total of 52 trainsets, each consisting of six cars. This development sets the stage for Delhi Metro’s continued growth and commitment to modern, sustainable urban transit.
