On Monday, a German government spokesperson accused US billionaire Elon Musk of attempting to influence the upcoming federal elections in Germany, set for February. Musk’s controversial support for the far-right AfD party, made public in a commentary in the Welt am Sonntag newspaper, has stirred significant debate.
The spokesperson confirmed that Elon Musk actions were an attempt to affect the German election, but also acknowledged his right to express his opinion. “Freedom of opinion also covers the greatest nonsense,” the spokesperson added.
In his commentary, Musk declared that only the AfD could save Germany, calling it “the last spark of hope for this country.” He went further to suggest that the party could lead Germany toward a future of economic prosperity, cultural integrity, and technological innovation.
Musk, who has invested in Germany, justified his comments by claiming his involvement in the country gave him the right to voice his concerns. His support for the AfD, a party often associated with right-wing extremism, has ignited controversy in German media, with some questioning the limits of free speech in political discourse.
This is not the first time Musk has expressed political views publicly. Previously, he backed former US President Donald Trump’s campaign, helping rally support for the business magnate-turned-politician.
